In Genezzano, in Rome’s countryside, hidden on a steep and enclosed site, by a small stream, almost pretending of being an inhabitable extension of the land, the monumental ruins of a Nymphaeum can be found. Built in different stages, one of them by the hand of Bramante, was never effectively completed and in the late 16th century was left abandoned along with its surrounding park. It’s right in the meaning of ruin that our design finds its roots; a witness of time and its passing, whose memory must be preserved at any cost. The design proposal aims to build a new centrality of the Nymphaeum and its park in the community of Genezzano, creating a space of leisure open to everyone, where to find restoration from the heat and shelter from the sever weather. The visitor is shepherd throughout his entire journey in the park, where the only designated spaces are the restrooms, laid on the hill’s back, by the themes of nature and water, strongly eradicated in the Nymphaeum’s essence; with the vegetation growing spontaneously around the paths, barely drawn onto the ground, and the water, in the form of steam, sprinkled from some thin arches that mark the paths, filling the air, refreshing the hot summer days and submerging the Nymphaeum in a magical atmosphere. Following the paths, small oasis can be discovered, where only some chairs are found, where the visitor can rest and feel the overwhelming atmosphere of the newly found space.
